Industrial Soho Loft Undergoes Classic Transformation
In the heart of Soho, a young couple sought to transform their industrial 1960s loft into a traditionally styled apartment. Inspired by classic design elements and driven by their love of fine art, they envisioned a timeless yet practical space. This renovation turned the kitchen into a central feature of the home, merging sophisticated design elements with modern conveniences and flow.
TRADITIONAL DESIGN ELEMENTS
Traditional crown molding and a tin ceiling elegantly conceal unsightly utilities and industrial features of the loft, offering a classic aesthetic.
FUNCTIONAL LAYOUT
The design aimed for a functional, open layout that is suitable for raising a family and dog-friendly as well. To add a personal touch to the space, the kitchen features a wall of glass-door shelving to showcase the homeowners' art and vintage china collection.
REALLOCATED SPACE
To maximize the kitchen’s functionality and storage, the previous media room transformed into a smaller den—allocating additional space to the kitchen—and an underutilized hallway turned into a walk-in butler’s pantry.
LOFTY CHALLENGES
The old loft presented structural challenges, such as uneven floors and ceilings and an outdated A/C system. The design overcame these challenges through custom moldings, cabinets, classic columns, and a ladder for harder-to-reach storage.
HIGH-END APPLIANCES
The choice of Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances reflects the homeowners' preference for high-end, reliable products. These appliances were integrated into the layout and design to enhance functionality and maintain the aesthetic goals of a traditional-style kitchen.
