Answer:

Cleaning Frequency

Dishwasher interiors should be cleaned once a month during normal use. Follow one of the methods listed below.

  • Dishwashers that are used heavily should be cleaned more often.
  • After cleaning, warm soapy water and a toothbrush can be used to clean hard-to-reach to areas.

To help dry dishes and prevent mold and mildew during normal use, it is recommended to leave the dishwasher door slightly open after each wash cycle.

Refer to the Cove Dishwasher Cleaning Guide for information on cleaning other areas of the dishwasher.

Cleaning Methods

Cleaning with Vinegar

To clean the dishwasher with a vinegar bath:

  1. Empty the dishwasher.
  2. Place 2 cups of vinegar in a dishwasher-safe bowl.
  3. Place the bowl of vinegar face-up on the lower rack.
  4. Do not add soap or other dishes to the unit.
  5. Run a Heavy wash cycle.
  6. Once cycle is completed, sprinkle the bottom of the dishwasher with baking soda.
  7. Run a Normal wash cycle to finish.

This will clean out the tub of any remaining soap or rinse aid residue and grease buildup.

  • As the vinegar breaks down residue and hard water deposits, a small amount of silt or other deposits may collect in the bowl. This is considered normal.
  • A few drops of food-safe essential oil may be added to the vinegar for scent, if desired.

Cleaning with Citric Acid to Remove Calcium or Lime Build-Up:

  1. Empty the dishwasher.
  2. Make sure the filter assembly is clean. See also, Cove Dishwasher Filter.
  3. Fill the detergent compartment with 3–4 ounces of citric acid crystals, then close the cover.
  4. Run a Normal wash cycle. See also, Cove Dishwasher Wash Cycles.
  5. Once cycle is completed, fill the detergent compartment with dishwasher detergent.
  6. Run a Normal wash cycle to finish.

These steps can be repeated if necessary.

Commercial Cleaners

Commercial dishwasher cleaners like Lemi Shine or Finish can be used in Cove Dishwashers.

  • Commercial cleaners may include citric acid in crystal or liquid form with additional cleaning agents or scents.

To use commercial dishwasher cleaners:

  1. Empty the dishwasher.
  2. Make sure the filter assembly is clean. See Cove Dishwasher Filter.
  3. Add commercial cleaner.
    • For citric acid crystal/powder cleaners, fill the soap compartment and close the soap compartment door.
  4. Run a Pots & Pans wash cycle. See Cove Dishwasher Wash Cycles.
  5. Once cycle is completed, inspect the inside of the unit.
    • If the tank still has a film, repeat the dishwasher cleaning process.
  6. If visible buildup has been removed, check the clarity of the water in the unit. To do so:
    1. Start a Rinse/Hold cycle.
    2. Listen for the dishwasher to drain, then fill. Next, the water will begin to circulate.
    3. Let the water circulate for 20 to 30 seconds, then slowly open the dishwasher door.
    4. If the water in the bottom of the dishwasher tub is cloudy, full of suds, or has a rainbow-like haze, another cleaning is recommended.
  7. Repeat this process until the water is clean and clear.
